WAVES
🌊 With more world class waves than anywhere else in the world, the Mentawai Islands are considered a surfing mecca guaranteeing consistent and quality surf all year round. World renowned as a surfers paradise, our resort is located in an extremely wave-rich region with 10 different breaks, all accessible within 10 minutes via boat. With such an extensive selection to choose from; long lefts and rights, barrel perfection, rippable walls, heavy slabs and fun beach breaks, our location at Kingfisher Resort caters for all levels and appetites of surfing. Due to their position, the islands are exposed to the Indian Ocean, which means from May to October we receive some of the biggest swells of the year, whereas November to February sees consistently smaller fun swells. Come March, April and May mid size swells start to show on the horizon.
LANCE'S LEFT
Literally on your doorstep! Located directly in-front of the resort and a stones throw away from your private beachfront bungalow. Perfect for all levels and a goofy foots dream. A breathtaking long left hand reef break famous for its year-round consistency offers “leg burners” on perfectly shaped open faces. With several different take off spots, riders of all levels are able to choose their perfect wave. Expect beautifully lined walls rolling down the reef with two fun barrel sections. Hone your turns, get comfortable in the barrel or push your limits.
LANCE’S RIGHT (HTs or HOLLOW TREES)
One of the most famous world class barreling right-handers, consistently picture perfect and barreling. The wave is so mechanical it’s machine-like. At its deepest point along the coral platform lies The Office section, a sharp takeoff for the intermediate or advanced rider to scoop in, hold their line, launch through and get spat out one of the best barrels and most unforgettable waves of their lives. This wave is quick 10 minutes away by Resort speedboat and you can be sure we will be first in the lineup when it it turns offshore. Lances right offers spectacular entertainment even for the non-surfer to enjoy close up from our boat in the channel. You will be able to feel and hear the adrenaline from the crowd as surfers and spectators hoot each other on into some of the best waves in the world.
BINTANGS
Bintangs, a great wave for all levels of surfers is a short 5 minute speedboat ride away. The short right hander offers up the funnest slab barrels in the Mentawais. Swell moves in from the deep ocean and unexpectedly jacks up into a thrilling horseshoe barrel as it bends back on itself. On smaller days it is super fun and rippable for everyone to enjoy. No need to wear your booties, the reef at Bintangs is deep making it suitable for even beginner surfers.The wave is situated across the bay, so from the comfort of your bungalow you will know when it turns offshore as you see the spray come off the back of the waves.
THE COBRA
The Cobra, as its name suggests pitches an “a-framed” peak and curls into a left hand barrel. The wave breaks over shallow reef so be sure to kick out before it closes. In the afternoons when the light is perfect you can expect golden barrels. Located just a few meters up from Lance’s left you will find an empty lineup. On occasion when the elements align it will connect with Lances Left offering some of the longest rides in the Mentawais. The Cobra is suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers.
MONKEYS
A fun shifty left that works on smaller swells and offers occasional barrels. The wave is tucked away in a beautiful bay away from plain sight. This is our go to spot when the swell is flat. It faces directly south and picks up any swell there might be in the Indian Ocean. When everywhere else is flat in the Mentawais, Monkeys still offers up a fun left hander for our guests to enjoy. Suitable for all levels of riders.
BINTANGS LEFT
Bintangs Left is a fun shifty left wave located within a spectacular bay just a short 5-minute jaunt from the resort. This hidden gem, often uncrowded, comes to life with higher tides, a small-medium swell and NW winds. Great option for guests looking to surf without a crowd.
BEACH BREAK 1 (BOSUA)
Nestled just 5 minutes from our resort, this pristine beach boasts long stretches of white sand, crystalline waters, and a picturesque palm-lined shoreline. It's a haven for both novice surfers looking to learn to surf and intermediates looking for a mellow wave. To the left, the sand compacting on the reef creates a left-hand point break wrapping into a rip bowl, perfect for smashing turns all the way to the beach. On the right, you'll find a shorter, hollower right-hand wave that breaks into the rip bowl. And, if you venture all the way to the right-hand side of the beach, you'll discover 'kiddies corner,' an idyllic spot for guests who want to learn to surf with small, manageable waves even on bigger swells.
BEACH BREAK 2 (MASUKUT)
Just a quick 20-minute ride from Kingfisher Resort, this beach break is the most consistent out of the three in our vicinity. With its year-round banks, this beach break offers perfect left and right A-frames ideal for honing your turns on the long rippable walls. This idyllic spot truly comes to life with a small to medium South swell, combined with lower tides and the welcoming presence of Northerly winds. Furthermore, this spot is typically empty, making it one of our favourite spots to surf clean offshore waves when the Northerly winds wreak havoc elsewhere in the Mentawais
BEACH BREAK 3 (FAR WEST BEACHES)
Located on the Western side of Sipora island, this secluded beach break is a 35-minute boat ride from the resort. It might be a little fickle, but when conditions align, it ranks among the finest beach breaks in Indonesia. With spitting left and right barrels stretching as far as the eye can see, this wave remains free from crowds as it's accessible only by boat and often overlooked by charters due to its concealed location within a deep bay. The end result? When it's on, you'll be sharing barrels with just your friends in the water.
MACARONIS
Join us at one of our beloved day-trip destinations, a wave that epitomizes machine like perfection. Described by many as being the most high performance wave in existence, this wave is for everyone. At the top is a hollow take off leading you straight into a 4-6 second barrel. For the surfers not chasing barrels, down the line is a second easier take of spot that leads you into a perfect wall to hone your turns. Macas is always a bit smaller than Lances Left, making it a good option for day trips on the bigger days. The magic happens with a SW groundswell and East winds.
TELESCOPES
Telescopes is one of the Mentawai's finest left-handers when it's firing on all cylinders. Whether you're chasing big barrels or seeking out rippable walls, this wave provides a thrilling variety. Telescopes needs a solid swell to get going. Best on big SW swells and E-SE winds.
THE point
An extremely fun right hand point break and great option for intermediate surfers looking for something less challenging than Lances Right(Hollow Trees). A mellow take-off followed by a lengthy, rippable wall, with the occasional barrel section, this wave shines when graced by a south swell, west wind, and medium to high tide.
SHIPWRECKS
A long, perfect barrelling wave over very shallow reef. For the advanced surfer only. Works best in a south swell and NW winds.

ROOMS
The Resort, located directly in front of world class wave Lance’s Left, is made up of three traditional style luxury beachfront bungalows all handmade by Mentawai craftsmen as well as one modern luxury suite with a private plunge pool. Set against a lush jungle backdrop, each private bungalow is positioned on the palm fringed white sand beachfront with panoramic views of the spectacular wave Lances Left. You can literally step from your bungalow terrace onto the sand and into the ocean within seconds. The design of our bungalows combines the best of the local look and feel with the rigor and comfort that most Western travelers enjoy. The result is an elegant yet strikingly exotic experience. The bungalows, designed for breathtaking views of the bay and wave, each have a big spacious terrace with comfortable lay back chairs that induce dozing off to the sound of the ocean and birds of the jungle. Maximum privacy is assured thanks to the natural landscape and property design. A fully furnished living room area inside the bungalow creates a homely feel. Each private bungalow can accommodate up to four people. At any one time, there will only ever be a maximum of twelve guests at the resort. The maximum guest limit allows us to take care in guaranteeing each guest a luxurious and comfortable stay. The private experience also ensures that the surf never gets too crowded. In line with the Mentawai theme, our restaurant and bar are the centerpiece of the resort. Take in the phenomenal view of Lance’s Left from large spacious terrace while indulging in a delicious and freshly prepared meal by chef. in-house chef selects only the tastiest local and imported ingredients to prepare a variety of nutritious meals daily, leaving you feeling energized and ready for another day of adventure. Start your day off with a coffee, fresh fruits and eggs / bacon. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are considered a “set menu” yet tailored to your taste buds. Enjoy a spread of freshly caught fish tacos or load up on a colorful Greek salad for lunch. Even if it’s the burger and fries that you cannot resist, we will remind you to save space for dinner! Our large local seafood BBQ’s at night are a vibe. Got space for more? Our chef delights in serving something sweet when a mouthwatering treat is in order. Sabit have 3 boats. Two for 8 people and one for 4 people. Built by local craftsmen and captained by experienced Mentawais natives, which guarantees fast and safe travel to the different surf spots.

In the event of an emergency evacuation, our 41-foot speedboat can easily make the crossing to Padang (PDG), becoming a lifeline when you need it most. For our returning guests at Kingfisher Resort, the familiar sight of our trusty 3-meter dinghy is unmistakable. This little boat serves as your surf taxi, shuttling you effortlessly in and out of the lineup at Lances Left. While Lances Left is right on your doorstep and an easy paddle out, we believe in minimizing your paddling time so you can maximize your wave-catching moments. Beyond convenience, this humble dinghy is a critical component of our safety measures. It stands ready at all times, ensuring that in the unfortunate instance of a snapped leash or a lost board, help is right there to take you back in to shore. Travel from Padang to Tuapejat by ferry takes approximately 3 hours.
Then, Tuapejat to Kingfisher Resort by speedboat takes approximately 1.5 hours.
