The Boat
Ombak Kabau is a purpose-built Mentawai surf charter vessel designed for comfort, safety, and true access to remote breaks.
At the heart of the boat is a large open sun deck — a space for morning stretches and yoga, post-surf recovery, slow afternoons between sessions, and cold beers at sunset as the boat settles at anchor.
Spacious deck areas, relaxed living spaces, and reliable tenders for fast access to the waves make Ombak Kabau more than transport — it’s your floating base in the Mentawai Islands.
History of Ombak Kabau
Ombak Kabau was built in 2006 by “Edi Om”, one of the pioneers of the surf charter business in the Mentawai islands.
Originally designed for Mentawai charters, the vessel received a new hull in 2019, and a full refurbishment of the entire boat in 2022.

Maki Liveaboard Experience
Maki is a liveaboard Phinisi built in 2016 in Sulawesi, Indonesia — a region with a strong maritime heritage dating back to the spice trading era.
Known as Bugis, the South Sulawesi people are regarded as some of the best boat builders and sailors in the East Indies, passing down their craft through generations.
The Vessel
When we found Maki, it had been serving as a luxury diving charter in Komodo for 2 years. We converted it into a rugged surf charter vessel in Mentawai, designed for maximum comfort while keeping safety paramount.
It features a living room with 2 dining tables, an open-plan kitchen, an external lounge, a sun deck with day beds, 5 cabins (3 en-suites), and a large enclosed boardroom with racks for up to 50 surfboards.
Two auxiliary dinghies are tethered to the back platform, ready to take you to the lineups.
